Free trial cancellation checklist: 4 steps to avoid getting charged

The exact sequence to follow the moment you start a free trial, so the auto-charge never catches you off guard.

1. Log the 3 essentials at signup

Service name, trial end date, and the price you will be charged if you forget — write these down the moment you sign up, not later.

2. Set your reminder 2 days early

Not on the last day. A 2-day buffer covers processing delays and cancellation windows that can close up to 24 hours before billing.

3. Cancel inside account settings

Log in to the service directly (not the app store, not by deleting the app) and cancel from Account or Subscription settings.

The trap to avoid

Watch out: Deleting the app, uninstalling, or letting a card expire almost never cancels the subscription itself — most services keep billing until you cancel inside your account.

4. Confirm and keep proof

Screenshot the cancellation confirmation screen or save the confirmation email in case you are charged anyway.
